EXPERT GUIDE 2026

Everything you need to know about flex before buying your next stick

Flex is probably the most misunderstood feature in hockey. Yet, choosing the wrong flex can negatively impact your shots, fatigue your wrists, and even shorten your stick's lifespan. This guide settles the matter once and for all.

KEY QUESTION

What is hockey stick flex?

Flex is a measure of the stiffness of the stick's shaft. The higher the number, the stiffer the stick. A flex of 70 means it takes 70 pounds of pressure to bend the stick 1 inch. In practice, flex directly influences the power, accuracy, and speed of your shots.

The ideal flex formula based on your weight

The basic rule used by most coaches and professional players: your ideal flex = half of your weight in pounds. This is an excellent starting point, to be adjusted according to your playing style.

KEY QUESTION

What is the difference between a low kick and a mid kick?

The kick point (or flex point) is where the shaft bends first during a shot. A low kick bends near the blade — ideal for quick wrist shots and shots on the move. A mid kick bends in the middle of the shaft — designed for powerful slapshots and heavy shots. All LabSports Pro All Black sticks use a low kick to maximize release speed.

LOW KICK POINT

Quick release

  • Explosive wrist shots
  • Shots on the move
  • Ultra-fast release
  • Deflections and one-timers
  • Ideal for forwards

✓ Used on all LabSports Pro All Black sticks

MID KICK POINT

Maximum power

  • Heavy slapshots
  • Point shots
  • Increased power
  • Maximum energy transfer
  • Ideal for defensemen

KEY QUESTION

What happens if I choose the wrong flex?

A flex that is too stiff prevents the stick from bending properly during the shot, reducing shot speed and increasing the risk of wrist injury. A flex that is too soft absorbs too much energy, results in inaccurate shots, and wears out the stick faster. The right flex releases stored energy at the right time to maximize puck speed.

Which curve to choose with your flex?

The curve and flex work together. Here are the most popular combinations among LabSports players:

KEY QUESTION

Does cutting a stick change the flex?

Yes. Every inch cut off a stick increases the effective flex by approximately 3 to 5 points. If you buy a 75 flex stick and cut 2 inches, you are effectively playing with a flex of about 83–85. You need to consider this when buying — if you plan to cut, order a flex slightly lower than the standard formula. The LabSports carbon extension (4") conversely allows you to lengthen the stick without significantly changing the flex.

In summary: how to choose your flex

  1. Take half your weight in pounds as your base flex
  2. If you cut the stick, order a lower flex (3–5 pts per inch cut)
  3. Fast offensive player → low kick (all LabSports)
  4. Powerful defensive player → consider a higher flex (87–95)
  5. Unsure? Flex 77 is the most versatile choice for adults
